Last nightโs performance of Calamity Jane at Bromleyโs Churchill Theatre was a joyous, gunslinging hoedownโfull of raucous energy and heart. As the production nears the end of its tour, it delivered a vibrant and memorable evening of theatre
Starring Carrie Hope Fletcher and Vinny Coyle, the show revisits the 1953 film made famous by Doris Day, following the tale of the well-meaning but often chaotic Calamity Jane. The story explores her relationships with Wild Bill Hickok & aspiring actress Katie Brown, played brilliantly by Seren Sandham-Davies.

What immediately captivated me was the incredible talent of the entire cast. Much of the ensemble doubles as the live band, a delightful feature that adds unique charm and a deeper connection between the characters and the music. Watching the cast seamlessly shift between instruments and roles was truly impressive.
Carrie Hope Fletcher & Vinny Coyle shine on stage together. Fletcher brings Calamityโs brash energy to life with warmth and vulnerability, evoking a modern nod to Doris Dayโs iconic performance. Her rendition of Secret Love was particularly movingโdelivered with such emotional depth that it sent shivers down my spine. Coyle, as Hickok, exudes charisma and charm, drawing admiration from the audience. Having previously seen the duo in Cinderella, their chemistry continues to impress.
The entire cast seemed to be thoroughly enjoying themselves, which made the production all the more engaging. Two standout performances came from Samuel Holmes and Hollie Cassar as Francis Fryer and Susan. Their comedic timing & dynamic double act had the audience in stitches. Holmes, in particular, had the crowd in the palm of his hand with his expressive facial reactions and sharp comedic delivery.
This Calamity is anything butโit's a triumph in fringe, fun, and full-hearted performances. โญโญโญโญโญ
