When you hear about a new musical, you don’t immediately expect it to be based on a film from 2004. But that’s exactly the case with 50 First Dates—and I was eager to see how this beloved rom-com would make the leap to the stage.
With book, music, and lyrics by David Rossmer and Steve Rosen, the musical follows Lucy, a kind-hearted art teacher living the same day over and over after a tragic accident. Enter Henry—a carefree lothario who just might turn her world upside down. But as he tries to change her life, could she end up changing his?
There’s so much to love about this production that I genuinely struggle to find fault. From the vibrant staging of Key Largo, to the heartfelt songs that truly moved me, and a cast that delivered phenomenal performances—this musical is packed with moments of joy, emotion, and charm.
I couldn’t help but be swept away by the constant waves of laughter and joy they brought to the stage. Just as my tears of emotion dried, they were replaced by fits of laughter. Every character delivered their one-liners with perfect timing, and for that, full credit goes to the brilliant writers.
The entire cast was an absolute joy to watch, though a few standout performances deserve special mention. Chad Saint Louis and Natasha O’Brien delivered exceptional comedic timing—every one-liner and gesture landed flawlessly, with Louis' portrayal of Sandy perfectly capturing my inner Disney fan. Aiesha Naomi Pease brought heartfelt emotion to her role as Ukulele Sue; her solo was deeply moving and beautifully performed. Leads Josh St. Clair & Georgina Castle were truly captivating. The emotional depth they brought to their characters resonated powerfully—I found myself tearing up more than once, only to be laughing moments later thanks to a perfectly timed line.
Overall, I implore everyone to see this musical, from screen to stage, the love story you’ll want to relive again and again!
